The Groes Girls 005 // Matilda Bea

At GROES, we design pieces made to be worn on repeat. Our core collections centre on high-quality, timeless essentials that earn their place in your wardrobe and work effortlessly all year round.

This week, we’re joined by Matilda Bea. Known for her beautifully recognisable home that regularly fills our feeds, Matilda invites us inside to share her thoughts on hosting this festive season, the art of gift giving, her personal style and more.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.

I’d describe my personal style as fun, feminine and a little nostalgic - lots of textural details, beautiful fabrics and pieces that feel special without ever feeling too dressy. I really love investing in timeless pieces; I used to buy a lot of colour and prints, but I found myself getting tired of things so quickly. Now my wardrobe is much more considered and classic. Day-to-day, you’ll usually find me in a great basic, my favourite pair of jeans, a cashmere jumper and then a gorgeous coat or blazer. I don’t really buy designer clothing, but I am a complete sucker for a beautiful handbag or a pair of shoes. And comfort is key - after far too many years wearing things a little too tight, I’m firmly in my era of buying one size up and letting me wear the clothes, not the other way around.

This festive season, I’m leaning into soft tailoring and slightly romantic shapes that feel elegant but easy. I’ll be wearing my favourite sparkly black kitten heels, a pop of red somewhere (always)!

WHAT ARE YOUR GO-TO TIPS FOR HOSTING THIS FESTIVE SEASON?

My go-to tips for hosting this festive season are to embrace creativity, add tactile moments, and keep the atmosphere playful without overcomplicating things. Last year, I threw a Christmas jumper cocktail party that instantly set a fun, relaxed tone, and I also hosted a vintage, kitschy girls’ night where I styled the table with sculptural veggie displays, heritage carrots and Brussels sprouts arranged almost like art. This year, I’m still putting together some fun ideas and gathering inspiration on Pinterest, but I am planning to keep leaning into those interactive, sensory moments that make guests feel involved. For me, great hosting is all about creating something people can touch, taste, and remember -  thoughtful, festive details that make everyone feel part of the celebration.

WHICH GROES PIECE ARE YOU REACHING FOR MOST AT THE MOMENT, AND HOW ARE YOU STYLING IT?

I am obsessed with the Agnes Set - it’s the piece I keep reaching for without even thinking. It’s been my go-to for festive dinners with the girls, but I also love throwing it on for cosy date nights at home when I want to feel a little more put-together without sacrificing comfort. I’ve been styling it with a chunky knit draped over my shoulders and ballet flats for something effortless, or swapping in heels and a statement earring or necklace when I want it to feel a bit dressier. It’s one of those rare sets that somehow works for absolutely everything.

I was just saying to Dilly that truly I’ve never found better-fitting silk trousers. They’re always either too short and swinging around the ankle, or clinging to the thighs - but these feel floaty and oversized without tipping into “I’m wearing pyjamas.” The proportions are perfect. And I love that you can wear the pieces together or separately: the top looks gorgeous with jeans, and the trousers with a big cosy cashmere jumper thrown on top.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE LONDON SPOTS FOR A GIRLS NIGHT, ANY HIDDEN GEMS?

One of my favourite hidden spots for a girls’ night is The Waterman’s Arms, it’s such a cosy place for a festive pub lunch and always ends up turning into a long afternoon. New Forms is another go-to, a super cool vinyl cocktail bar that feels really different and intimate. I also love The Hart in Marylebone for a chic, low-key wine night, while The Anglesea Arms in Hammersmith has that classic London pub feel with genuinely great food. And if you are after bar snacks or cocktails that feel a little sexy, Dover Street Counter is such a fun new spot in Mayfair!

YOUR HOME IS SUCH AN INSPIRATION, DO YOU HAVE ANY GIFT IDEAS YOU LOVE TO GIVE OR RECEIVE?

I love gifts that feel thoughtful and a little unexpected. Good-quality butter is one of my favourites to give, wrapped beautifully with a fresh loaf or some flaky sea salt, it feels luxurious but wonderfully simple. I also adore gifting (and receiving!) fun antique pieces: a quirky silver ramekin, a vintage candlestick, or a little ceramic dish. They add so much character to a home and feel like treasures rather than just “objects.”

I have also been loving supporting small, independent brands this year, La Jambu does the most beautiful homeware, and their pieces make such special, memorable gifts. The Daisy London jewellery case is another favourite for something practical but chic, and obviously the new Agnes set from GROES is such a treat for anyone who loves a staple co-ord. And for something wearable that still feels elevated, Neima Row earrings are such a perfect staple.
