The Groes Girls 008 // Bryony Basse
For Mother’s Day, we sat down with Bryony Basse in Copenhagen, founder of Pilates by Bryony and a new mother. She reflects on how motherhood has influenced her style, the pieces she gravitates towards in her everyday wardrobe, and how to incorporate movement into a busy routine.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m the founder of Pilates by Bryony, an online Pilates and wellness platform and app that I started almost by accident five years ago. What began as teaching a few classes and sharing movement online slowly grew into a global community. Pilates has always been more than exercise for me, it healed my body after a car accident, it has meant that I have no symptoms anymore of rheumatoid arthritis, it’s where I reconnect with my body, clear my head, and come back to myself. Recently I became a mum to my daughter Elle, which has been the most profound shift. Life right now is a balance of building my business and learning this entirely new rhythm of motherhood. My days are full but in the best way, movement in the morning, time with my baby, creating content for the app, and trying to stay present through it all.
WHAT ARE YOUR THREE NON-NEGOTIABLE WARDROBE ESSENTIALS AND WHY?
I’m very drawn to pieces that feel quietly luxurious but also functional. My wardrobe is quite minimal. It's built around things that layer well and move with me throughout the day. A few staples I constantly reach for are my Groes London Coat, Kate Blazer and white Florence Shirt. I also love the Margot Trousers, The Row Gala pants and simple tanks or long-sleeve tops paired with a clean simple day heal or trainer. And of course elevated activewear that doesn’t look overly “sporty”. I love clothes that feel refined but comfortable, pieces you can wear from a Pilates class straight into lunch or meetings without needing to always change.
HAS YOUR APPROACH TO GETTING DRESSED CHANGED SINCE BECOMING A MUM?
It’s definitely become simpler and more intentional. I have less time to think about outfits now, so I rely on a wardrobe where everything works together. Comfort has become even more important, but I still want to feel like myself and like a cool mom haha. I’ve realised that when you have pieces you truly love and that fit well getting dressed becomes more effortless. It’s less about trends and more about creating a uniform that feels easy to piece together.
DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLING TRICKS THAT HELP YOU FEEL PUT TOGETHER QUICKLY?
I think the biggest trick is having a strong foundation wardrobe where everything mixes easily. When the base is minimal and well-cut, you never feel overdone but you always feel polished. A few simple things I always do:
Keeping colours neutral so pieces layer easily.
A great coat instantly elevates even the simplest outfit.
Investing in beautiful fabrics — cashmere, wool, cotton.
And simple jewellery always makes an outfit feel finished.
IF SOMEONE ONLY HAD 20 MINUTES A DAY FOR MOVEMENT, WHAT WOULD YOU RECCOMEND THEY FOCUS ON?
Twenty minutes can be incredibly powerful if it’s intentional and effective. I’d focus on three things: core strength, mobility, and breath. A Pilates class from the app that connects the deep core, glutes and posture muscles will support the entire body. I always encourage people to move with precision and control rather than rushing through exercises. Even just 20 minutes of movement can completely shift how you feel in your body and how you move through the rest of the day.
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT WELLNESS NON-NEGOTIABLES?
Right now my wellness routine is quite simple, especially with a baby. For me wellness isn’t about doing everything perfectly it’s about creating small rituals that support your nervous system and bring you back to balance. My non-negotiables are:
Movement most days (even if it’s only 15–20 minutes)
Getting outside and walking with Elle.
I really prioritise eating good food that keeps my energy stable.
Breathwork to help regulate my nervous system.
Protecting my sleep as much as possible.
HAS BECOMING A MUM CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON WELLNESS AND MOVEMENT?
It’s made me appreciate movement in a completely new way. Postpartum really reminded me that our bodies are something to support and rebuild with intention and care, not punish. Pilates helped me reconnect with my core, pelvic floor and strength again. I’m 12 weeks in and I feel strong again and it’s all down to doing the workouts from the app. It’s also shifted my mindset from aesthetics to longevity and energy. I want to feel strong, calm and present not just now but for the years ahead with my daughter. If anything, motherhood has deepened my belief that movement should always be supportive, restorative and sustainable.
